2018 Kawasaki Z400

Light and nimble, the Z400 is an impressive introductory for those wanting to get into street bikes without the ferocity of a 1000cc powerplant. In a recent article, Cycle World called the Z400 an “exciting, inspiring…and affordable”  motorcycle without being intimidating. Comparing it to the 400cc Ninja, the Z400 carries all the same hardware – brakes, frame, and engine – but gives it to you in a more ergonomically sound setup. The race-bred body design of the Ninja could deter the new or average rider from what would have been an amazing machine, would only their back be made more comfortable. The Z400 however, solves that issue with a more standard suspension damping and an upright position for the rider, maximizing comfort while keeping them in full control of the bike. They [Cycle World] go on to claim, “…I’d be a better rider today if this had been my first motorcycle.”

Starting, accelerating, and navigating corners at speed is a thrilling experience thanks to enhanced engine design and a board power band. The parallel-twin is rated for 43 horses which you get full tap nearly from idle to redline. The gears pull swift and strong through all six speeds, reaching its peak torque of 28 lbs-ft at 8000 RPM. The small and light weight frame with reduced wheel base and extended swing arm weights in at just 363 pounds. Rider feedback is superb and the bike will teach you the finer points of control without the threat of lashing out after a mistake. The seat is low for a sport bike at 30.9 inches, again, making the Z400 a perfect bike for the entry level or smaller framed riders among us. A narrow and taperd tank also goes a long way in helping to keep your feet on the pavement.

Off of the Kawasaki showroom floor, the Z400 sets you back at just $4700. This particular Z wears a front crash bar by SW-Motech, practically unused, front and rear Michelin Road 5 tires, and with a measly 5000 miles on the clock can be had for just $4000. An easy price for an easy-to-ride and fun-to-fling-around bike.
