For Sale: 1978 Yamaha XS1100 Brat
1978 Yamaha XS1100
Designed during the mid 70’s war between manufacturers for the largest possible engine size and top speeds, the XS1100 was a technological dream come true. Borrowing bits of engineering that date back to late 50’s Maseratti masterpieces and setting in motion what would eventually lay the foundations for such engines as Harley’s EVO design, the XS1100 not only made a lot of power, but it did so efficently, and on terribly engineered gasoline.
Utilizing a revolutionary design in hemispherical combustion chambers a 3-dome design was created to reduce incoming air and compression turbulence, decreasing ignition timing, and allowing engineers to run a higher compression ratio than traditionally allowed by hemi-heads. With that design a 9.2:1 compression ratio was achieved on the poorly refined gasoline of the late 70’s gas and the 1100 generated a reported 95hp at 8000 rpm. A fully counterbalanced single piece crankshaft reduces main bearing load by 50%.
This XS is sporting a custom brat seat from Rich Phillips Leather on a custom-built hoop, a custom leather side bag, aftermarket pipe, and Trail Master E605 tires. While I don’t have a dyno sheet to boast hard numbers, on modern gas, and with the weight savings from being trimmed to a brat design, this bike is a screamer.
